South Whidbey’s softball team suffered a pair of 10-run losses this week to Cedarcrest and Lakewood.

The girls traveled for both games and come home a bit earlier than normal because of the league’s 10-run mercy rule that cut the games short of their allotted seven innings.

On Thursday, South Whidbey fell 14-1 at Lakewood. The Cougars tallied three home runs in the dominant win.

“It was a case of them just hitting the ball,” said Falcon head coach Tim Collins. “I thought they were the best team we faced. I don’t know why they’ve lost some games, to tell you the truth.”

The Falcons’ bats were quiet with only one hit by South Whidbey, which came in the fifth inning.

Lakewood won the game after the top of the fifth inning.

Making up for a rainout Tuesday, the Falcons lost to the Cedarcrest Red Wolves on Wednesday 17-7 in six innings.

Despite tallying 11 hits — including four doubles, a triple by Chantel Brown and Chloe Huffman hitting 3-for-3 — to Cedarcrest’s seven, South Whidbey gave up 21 walks.

“It was a really, truly ugly game,” Collins said.

“They scored seven runs in an inning and didn’t hit the ball out of the infield,” he added.

South Whidbey has one more away game at the Cascade Conference-leading Granite Falls (7-0 conference, 7-1 overall) on Monday, April 14 before a string of six consecutive home games.
