Lynden Christian, the top 1A team in the Northwest Conference, displayed why, blanking visiting South Whidbey 6-0 Monday, Oct. 22, in the first round of the district tournament.
The Falcons (9-6-1) now face Cedar Park Christian (8-8) at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Sultan.
If South Whidbey wins, it will challenge the winner of Granite Falls (9-6-1) and Meridian (8-7-2) for third place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Sultan.
If the Falcons lose to CPC, they will play the loser of Granite Falls-Meridian at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sultan for fifth place and the final berth into the bi-district tournament.
King’s (15-2) and Lynden Christian (10-5-2) play for the district title at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in Sultan.
In the loss to Lynden Christian, the Falcons “came out very flat as a team and did not pressure Lynden Christian throughout game,” South Whidbey coach Terry Swanson said. “We did not vie for or win many 50/50 balls.”
Swanson called the match an “antithesis of the King’s game.”
The Falcons beat the league-leading and defending state champion Knights last week.
“I reminded the players, we lost to King’s 5-0 in early October and beat them 2-0 last week,” he said. “Sometimes you have games like this that you come back to practice and get ready for the next playoff game.
“Our players recognize the importance of the next game against CPC, and they will be ready. They are resilient and have a great attitude.
“By the time we left Bellingham, I could hear laughter in the back of the bus and the girls left that game behind them and will prepare for the next.”
