South Whidbey misses chances in loss to Wolves / Volleyball

Unable to take advantage of its opportunities, the South Whidbey High School volleyball team lost 3-1 at Coupeville Monday, Oct. 15.

The Wolves (5-2, 8-2) broke a tie for second place with the Falcons (4-3, 7-5) with the 25-22, 9-25, 25-18, 25-18 win.

South Whidbey had an excellent chance to take the first set but couldn’t capitalize on eight Coupeville service errors.

The second game was all South Whidbey. Alyssa Ludtke led the charge with two kills and three aces in the set.

Megan Leonard and Arianna Briggs each added a kill and tip, Allie Brady recorded a kill and Emma Hodson and Kayla Knauer fired aces.

The Falcons then jumped to a 5-1 lead in the third set but couldn’t hang on.

“Our missed servers and offense hurt us tonight,” coach Mandy Jones said.

In the second set, South Whidbey’s serving kept the Wolves out of their system, Jones said, but her team wasn’t able to duplicate the performance in the other games.

Despite the loss, the defense “played really good,” Jones said. “It was scrappy with good reads.”

She lauded Angelina Wilson’s strong passing and digging and Ludtke’s “tough serves and great kills.”

Ludtke finished with eight kills, three aces and seven digs; and Leonard had nine kills and eight digs.

Wilson added 16 digs, and Chloe Johnson recorded 20 assists.

South Whidbey hosts first-place King’s (7-0, 10-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.
