The South Whidbey tennis team beat Mount Vernon 5-2 at home Monday, despite the wind and rain.

The Falcons’ season record stands at 9-2.

In singles, South Whidbey’s Lena Nichols lost 4-6, 6-4 and 6-7, Reilly O’Sullivan won 6-0, 6-1, Jessica Carey won 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 and Laina Stonefelt lost 4-6, 3-6.

“Lena continues to improve, and turned in anonther great effort in a loss,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer.

“Reilly is in a good space right now, playing smart and consistent tennis; the best tennis of her career,” he added.

“Jessica continues to work hard and managed to come out on top on this occasion,” Kramer said.

“Due to illness, Laina filled in at fourth singles instead of playing her usual doubles. She played tough, but could not stay with her opponent,” the coach continued.

Doubles partners Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen added to their winning streak for South Whidbey, cruising 6-0, 6-0.

Katie Holt and Hayley Newman won 6-3, 6-1 and Teagen Nielsen and Bayley Heggenes won 6-0, 6-4.

“In doubles, Shannon and Julia continue to dominate as they have all season,” Kramer noted.

“Katie and Hayley returned to good form and played more aggressively in winning their match. Teagen and Bayley started faster today after several lethargic starts earlier in the week,” he said.

District playoffs begin in three weeks, and the last few matches will be very important in terms of preparation, Kramer added.

At 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 3, the team hosts Burlington-Edison on the high school courts.
