South Whidbey boys tennis beat Island rival Coupeville 5-0 last week.

“It’s been what I expected,” said Falcon head coach Tom Kramer.

The team traveled to Friday Harbor Thursday to play against the Wolverines. First, second and third singles players Riley Newman, Van Morgen and Steven Raden didn’t travel with the team. Also, first doubles team Harrison Price and Zach Comfort didn’t travel.

Kramer sent 12 players to Friday Harbor to play against a team he explained was rebuilding its ranks. Four players from junior varsity were bumped up to make the match more competitive. South Whidbey won 3-2.

“What I like is for both teams to have a good match,” Kramer said. “If it’s a better matchup it’s better for the kids.”

Nancy Ricketts, assistant coach, traveled with the team and Kramer stayed to practice with his top varsity players.

Newman and Morgen remain undefeated, while his top doubles team still has some work to do. Kramer planned to work on their serves, returning serves and high volleys.

“We work it to death till we got it right,” Kramer said. “If it’s not going to be leaps and bounds, at least it can be steady.”
