Several South Whidbey track and field athletes performed at their very best during the two-day Cascade Conference championships at Cedarcrest High School late last week.
King’s took both conference team titles.
Falcon Jon Poolman placed second in the 100-meter dash in 11.24 seconds, 12-tenths of a second behind Archbishop Murphy’s James Guy. Poolman then beat Guy in the 200-meter race with 22.54 and also placed first in the 400 meters in 50.62.
In boys field events, South Whidbey’s Jackson Engstrom put his shot 46 feet, 11 inches for third place, and Zach Idso threw the discus 134-06 for third.
Will Hallberg, fighting off an earlier foot injury, was first in the long jump with 21 feet,
6 inches (a personal best) and first in the triple jump with 46-4.25.
In the girls track events, McKenzie Walker was third in the 100 meters at 13.09 for the Falcons and third in the 200-meter dash at 27.12. Walker was second in the 400 meters with 1:02.68. In the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, Laura Barrow won both with a time of 16-05 and 48.65 respectively.
Freshman Angelina Berger put her shot 32-3.50 for second.
Cayla Calderwood swept the girl’s jumping events, winning the high jump with a season-best 5-02, the long jump with 15-9.75 and the triple jump at 34 feet even, her second straight triple conference title.
