Relays run well at Lake Washington

A handful of South Whidbey girls track athletes challenged some of the top teams in Western Washington at the all-classification Lake Washington Invitational on May 3.

The Falcon 800-meter relay team of Madi Boyd, Maia Sparkman, Anna Leski and Bailey Forsyth finished in seventh place in 1:49.36, the second-fastest time set by the relay team this season.

South Whidbey’s 1,600-meter relay squad of Boyd, Leski, Jaime Rodden and Mackenzie Hezel placed eighth in 4:21.15, about eight seconds slower than their fastest mark set the week before at the Terrace Invite.

The 400-meter relay unit, also featuring Boyd, Sparkman, Forysth and Leski, ended up in 12th place in 51.83, their second-best time this season.

Rodden ran her career-best 800-meter race in 2:23.64, improving two seconds from her previous best mark set at the Terrace Invite. Her time landed her in the 1A top 10 of times set in the girls 800-meter race.

Scratches mar boys Shoreline Invitational

South Whidbey sent less than a dozen of its boys track and field athletes to the Shoreline Invitational on Saturday. Two of its top field performers — seniors Nick French and Andy Madsen — scratched from their events in the javelin and pole vault, respectively.

In the 1,600-meter relay, Cole Zink, Evan Mellish, Brandon Asay and Tanner Lobdell placed 17th in 3:38.42.

Jordan Parrick, a senior, finished the 300-meter hurdles in 45 seconds, good for 32nd place overall and his best time this season. He also finished the 110-meter hurdles in 17.56 seconds for 27th place.

Zink finished the 800-meter race in 2:05.95 for 31st place.

A pair of Falcons ran the mile. Evan Mellish, a sophomore, finished in 5:00.66, and Truman Hood set his personal record at 5:02.66.
