After dispatching a fired-up Coupeville High School soccer team Monday, Oct. 15, South Whidbey will host first-place King’s at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.
The visiting Falcons defeated Coupeville 3-0 Monday, as the highly-motivated Wolves put in a spirited effort on their Senior Night.
“Their players were beating us to the ball and winning 50/50 opportunities,” South Whidbey coach Terry Swanson said about the first 30 minutes of the contest.
“They had several scoring opportunities on Molly Cobb, but she kept the ball out of our goal.”
Alison Papritz broke through for the Falcons with a goal at the 4:47 mark of the first half.
South Whidbey picked up its play in the second half, according to Swanson, dominating possession and creating more scoring opportunities.
Papritz scored again, this time in the 55th minute, off a cross by Karyna Hezel.
Five minutes later, Kelly Murnane netted a well-placed shot from outside the penalty area.
“Coupeville played strong throughout the game and had several late scoring opportunities,” Swanson said. “Nicole Helseth, returning from injury, had to make several key saves from shots outside the penalty area to maintain the shutout.”
Next up is another shot at King’s (9-0, 14-1). The Knights beat the Falcons 5-0 Sept. 27. No other team has scored more than two goals in a match against the sturdy Falcon defense.
South Whidbey (6-3, 8-5-1) is tied for second with Granite Falls and will try to secure the second seed into the playoffs by upsetting the Knights.
