Volleyball team loses at Murphy

The South Whidbey volleyball team had a tough time against unbeaten Archbishop Murphy Wednesday, losing 22-25, 16-25 and 16-25.

The Falcons are now

3-3 in league standings and 3-3 overall.

“I told the girls before the start of the game that

I wanted them to go out and play their hardest,” Falcon coach Mandy Jones said.

“I gave them some goals, like 90 percent of our serves must be in and

50 percent of our sets needed to be run as combo plays. That seemed to ease their minds a little, as these were realistic.”

Jones said that in the first game, South Whidbey’s defense was all over the court and offense was hot enough to throw a scare into AMHS.

“I was still very proud of them. The Wildcats weren’t as good as Meggan [assistant coach Lubach] and I expected them to be, although they did have some really tough serves and we had a hard time adjusting to them.

The second two games saw the team having a hard time getting the ball down and finding the holes in the Wildcat’s defense.

“Those two things got us, and the girls had a hard time rallying back,” Jones added.

Katie Holt had five blocks for the Falcons and Cayla Calderwood made seven. Freshman Brittany Wood was a digging machine on defense as well as Allison Wood, Kelsey Dorpat and Lindsey Newman. Wood had six kills; Newman and Calderwood had three each.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday,

Oct. 7, the girls welcome Coupeville to the home court.

Girls basketball league starting

Girls can sign up now for South Whidbey Parks & Recreation’s girls basketball league. This long-standing league has been an excellent way to learn and enjoy the game of basketball.

“Experience basketball if you are a rookie or an advanced player,” said program coordinator Carrie Monforte. “Our league offers a great first experience or a chance to refine your skills. There will be equal play for participants in a positive learning environment. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of a team.”

There will be a skills evaluation on Tuesday,

Oct. 7 for divisions in grades 2-3, 4-5 and 6-8; register at the skills evaluation.

Team assignments will take place the following week, and practices begin shortly thereafter. Games will begin in early November or late October, and the season ends in mid-December with a round-robin-style jamboree. The $60 fee includes team jerseys.
