The South Whidbey girls tennis team learned a few lessons this week from Northwest League rival Squalicum, losing 5-2.

“Our inexperience, especially at singles, showed up today,” said Falcon coach Tom Kramer. “The Squalicum girls were consistent, focused and patient, qualities we need to work on.”

Falcon singles players Reilly O’Sullivan lost 1-6, 0-6; Alexa Brewster lost 1-6, 1-6; Kalie Stayskal lost 2-6, 1-6 and Lena Nichols lost 1-6, 1-6.

The first and third pairs turned in a dominating performance, however.

“They kept Squalicum from getting back into the match by applying the necessary pressure in each game,” Kramer noted. “The second doubles — Katie and Hayley — simply lost their way, allowing Squalicum to take over the momentum and the rest of the match. There are some obvious things we need to do to keep this from happening again.”

In doubles, Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen won for the Falcons, 6-2, 6-1; Katie Holt and Hayley Newman lost 6-2, 3-6 and 3-6 and Teagen Nielsen and Bayley Heggenes won 6-1, 6-1.

Wednesday, the girls rebounded with a 6-1 win over Lynden. South Whidbey’s Alexa Brewster, Lena Nichols and Stayskal won in singles, while Craig, Iversen, Holt, Newman, Nielsen and Heggenes won their doubles contests.
