Earlier this spring, the South Whidbey High School baseball team tossed back-to-back no-hitters. Last week the Falcon softball squad matched the feat.
Freshman Chanel Sterba fired a no-hitter in South Whidbey’s 17-1, five-inning non-league win over visiting La Conner Friday, March 29, two days after Melody Wilkie held Sultan hitless.
After committing two errors in the first inning, the Falcon defense stiffened and played clean ball the rest of the way to back up Sterba’s strong effort. La Conner’s lone run off Sterba was unearned.
On offense, “patience at the plate was the key” for the Falcons, according to coach Brad Jaeger. South Whidbey received 23 walks, with Kayla Knauer drawing four and scoring four times.
Arianna Briggs, Wilkie, Ari Marshall and Natalie Wilmoth all collected hits.
South Whidbey (1-1, 4-3) doesn’t play again until after spring break when it travels to Coupeville (2-1, 4-5) for a North Sound Conference game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.
