SULTAN — The second-to-last conference wrestling match went poorly for South Whidbey as the Sultan Turks dominated the Cascade Conference match 61-9.

South Whidbey scored six points on senior Steve Sutton’s decision and a forfeit.

The Falcons wrestled so poorly, their head coach had nothing to say after the match.

South Whidbey forfeit three bouts — 126, 132 and 182 pounds — though the 132-pound match was a double forfeit, so neither team scored. The Falcons’ only victory was from Sutton in the 152-pound battle.

Sutton struck first with a two-point takedown. His opponent, Turk freshman Dylan Oster, attempted to bring Sutton down, but Sutton fought out of the grasp and stood. At the start of the second period, Sutton began down and stood for one point, though Oster trapped him to the mat for two points.

The Falcon senior co-captain responded with a two-point reversal and a two-point near fall. Oster began the third period down, and trailed Sutton 7-2. During a medical timeout, Sutton limped on his taped right ankle, and his face cringed a little. Oster scored a one-point stand and a two-point takedown before time expired.

The Turks celebrated their Senior Night in resounding fashion, trumping the Falcons. Each of its three seniors won their matches, and two were pins. Jesse Castillo, the fifth-ranked 195-pound wrestler in 2A, quickly pinned Falcon senior Jerimiah Robey. Castillo scored a two-point takedown, rolled Robey onto his shoulders, trapped him and won with a pin in 1:34.

Turk senior Brittany Tabor claimed her victory faster than her teammate. Against Falcon freshman Steven Smith (106 pounds), Tabor let Smith make the first move, and it was the wrong one. She flipped Smith onto his shoulders, his legs flailing in the air and scored the pin in 1:01.

The third Turk senior’s match went the distance. Kyle Weaver faced Falcon sophomore Andy Madsen (140). Within 10 seconds, Weaver scored a two-point takedown, followed by a two-point near fall. Trapped under Weaver’s grip, Madsen tried to stand but was rolled by Weaver onto his shoulders for another near fall, this time for three points.

In the second period, Madsen defended himself better, but Weaver was able to score a two-point reversal. Weaver scored a two-point reversal in the final period and another three-point near fall to win the match 14-0.

Only three other matches went past the first round. Falcon senior Montana Johnson lost a 10-3 decision to Turk junior Jason Barrus (160). After they circled the mat for the first dozen seconds, Johnson shot at the shorter Barrus’ legs, which the Turk used to score a takedown and a near fall.

Barrus began the second period down. Johnson scored a three-point near fall, but was quickly flipped as Barrus scored a reversal. At the start of the third period, Johnson was down and Barrus scored a three-point near fall to win.

In the 170, Falcon sophomore Calvin Shimada was pinned in 3:08. Turk sophomore James Boglivi controlled the match from the whistle. He scored a takedown and a three-point near fall before Shimada stood for one point and rolled out of Boglivi’s grip.

Starting the second round down, Shimada stood and scored a penalty point to trail Boglivi 5-3. Shimada tried to lift Boglivi, but was rolled and pinned.

Sultan freshman James MacKenzie (120) pinned Falcon freshman Will Holbert in 3:16. Holbert never scored in the match.

Turk junior Jake Naslund pinned Falcon senior Avery Buecher (195) in 47 seconds.

Falcon sophomore Jose Chavez was pinned in 1:43 by Turk sophomore Taylor Comfort (285).

Josh McElhinny won the 113 by Sultan’s forfeit.

Falcon senior Cameron Schille was pinned in 1:12 by Turk junior Jack Boyd (145).

South Whidbey’s Senior Night was rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 30 against Archbishop Murphy. The Falcons will honor four seniors: Buechner, Johnson, Robey and Schille.
