SW girls tennis continues dominance

The South Whidbey girls tennis team rolled through the Lakewood squad 7-0 Monday afternoon.

Falcon head coach Karyle Kramer chose to rest some of her top players, including Hayley Newman, Jessica Cary, Claire Hofius and Amelia Weeks, after the previous week full of matches. With a rotated lineup – which seems to change every match – the Falcons swept the Cougars.

At first singles, freshman Carlie Newman defeated Talli Caldwell 6-3, 6-1.

“This was a good win for Carlie,” Kramer said. “Hayley beat Caldwell last time, so I thought it would be a good chance for Carlie to see how she could do against Lakewood’s top player.”

“She lost the same number of games her older sister (Hayley) did last week.”

Kalie Stayskal, a Falcon senior, moved from doubles to second singles and didn’t lose a game. She beat Alisa Smith 6-0, 6-0.

Tess Radisch, a sophomore, defeated the Cougars’ third singles player Marrisa Lasso 6-0, 6-0. The first-year Falcon tennis player used her speed, a low, hard first serve and moved the ball from sideline to sideline.

“This is her first year playing tennis and she’s picked it up quickly,” Kramer said. “I’m impressed with her consistent ground strokes and her ability to understand and implement strategy, especially for someone with so little experience on the court.”

In the fourth singles match, Carol Jenkinson defeated Violet Jensen 6-4, 6-1.

The doubles teams were paired with first-time partners. The first doubles team of Tessa Chiarizio and Katrina Layton won in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 over McKayla Schwiger and Kylie Staley. South Whidbey’s second doubles squad of Lucy Rock and Carrin McErlane defeated Haley Winter and Hannah Krusinger 6-0, 6-0. The Falcons’ third duo of Amanda Lee and Sophie Nelson beat Alexis Miller and Jenny Tsengelmaa 6-4, 6-0.

Last week, the Falcon girls tennis team capped its string of five matches in as many days with a 6-1 victory over the Anacortes Seahawks on Friday. The Falcons’ doubles teams swept their competition in straight sets, and the only loss was at third singles.

At first doubles, Falcon tandem of Weeks and Stayskal defeated Seahawks Carly Anderson and Kylee Berlin 6-0, 6-0.

Falcon seniors Hofius and Cary won 6-0, 6-0 against Miranda Millard and Meghan Geer in the second doubles match.

Kramer changed her lineup again at third doubles, pairing Rock and Colleen Groce. They defeated Colleen Anderson and Milan McMakin 6-3, 6-3.

In singles, Hayley Newman continued her run through District 1 opponents with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ashleigh Neitzel. Her younger sister Carlie Newman, defeated Paola Jurkovich 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

South Whidbey’s only lost match was at third singles, where Taylor  Phillips narrowly beat Chiarizio 6-4, 7-5. The fourth singles match was won by Radisch, who defeated Mikel McMakin 6-3, 6-1.
