Tickets on sale for coho salmon derby

The derby is hosted by the Sons of the American Legion, the Puget Sound Anglers and Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club.

A trophy and a $300 cash prize will be awarded for the largest Coho salmon. Additional cash prizes of $200 for second place and $100 for third may be won.

Other merchandise can be won for smaller salmon. A door prize raffle also will be held among derby ticket holders during the awards presentation.

Tickets are $5 per entry, with a maximum of two entries per person, and are available at Freeland Ace Hardware, Oak Harbor Ace Hardware, American Legion Post No. 141, Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club, Sebo’s Do-It-Center and the Short Stop.

Participants must purchase a ticket prior to the derby. Fishers may cast in the waters around Whidbey Island (Fishing areas 8-1, 8-2 and 9) with sport gear (rod and reel). Only coho salmon may be entered.

Weigh-in will be at Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17. The awards ceremony will follow weighing at 4:30. Participants must be present to win a prize.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase starting at noon.
