The South Whidbey girls basketball team was down by a single point with 18 seconds left in the game Friday against Cedarcrest.
“I ran out of timeouts, we ran into foul trouble, the girls were out of position and the Red Wolves came back and we lost by four,” said Falcon coach Henry Pope.
The final was 40-36. South Whidbey is 0-2 and Cedarcrest 3-0 in the league standings.
Despite the loss, Pope was upbeat about the game, especially against a tough team like Cedarcrest.
“Even though still hurt by injuries to our key post players, the girls stayed strong, even after being down 16-3 after the first quarter,” he said. “We switched to a zone defense and the Red Wolves suddenly were staring defeat in the face.”
Pope noted that Falcons Alannah Alber, Courtney Linehan, Lacy Williams and Reilly O’Sullivan all stepped up.
Alber made 12 points, Linehan added nine, Williams had six (plus 11 rebounds on a sprained ankle) and Ashlinn Prosch contributed five for the Falcons.
