Leierer, Heggenes, Hodson and Davis: those are the men who coached South Whidbey Falcon football for the past 50-plus years. Who will be next in a short line of succession?

Andy Davis and Mark Hodson resigned as the co-head coaches of the football team last week after 14 years running the program. The head coaching job was posted Thursday, March 6, by the South Whidbey School District, and is expected to be filled by the school’s spring break in early-April.

Coaching the Falcons comes with a stipend between $4,278 and $4,721, depending on the applicant’s experience. The money is a bit disproportionate to the work, according to the outgoing coaches, who left because the time commitment was interfering with their time with family. Davis and Hodson likened being the co-head coaches to another full-time job in terms of hours spent on football activities from mid-August to early November.

Applicants for the South Whidbey job are expected to know football, develop the district-wide program, work with students, school administration, staff and parents, motivate athletes and promote the team in the community. Athletic Director Kelly Kirk said that, contrary to popular belief, no priority is given to district staff or faculty.

“We’d love it if the coach was a teacher in the building, but we don’t know if that’ll happen,” Kirk said.

Deadline for applications is Friday, April 4. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for April 21-25.

The vacancy will be the second filled by Kirk in his first year at South Whidbey High School. He hired Scott Collins to coach the boys basketball team in 2013.
